Tsinghua University i-Space ‘i-Program’ Smart City Technology Learning Camp

Our school, in collaboration with Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, organized the "Future City" Smart City Technology Learning Camp from 15th to 16th December. A total of 25 students from S4 to S6 participated in the two-day experiential learning program held at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. The camp featured Professor Terrence Curry from the Institute of Future Human Habitats, Assistant Professor Chen Xinlei from the Institute of Data and Information Research, and several graduate students as course instructors. They shared cutting-edge knowledge in the fields of smart cities and the Intelligence of Things, and inspired students' creative thinking through experiencing different artificial intelligence designs

The first session was delivered by Professor Terrence Curry, the founder of Zao House, from the Institute of Future Human Habitats. He explained how the principles of architecture can be integrated with artificial intelligence to design habitats that improve people’s quality of life through understanding diverse living needs and urban sustainable development. Later, he led the students to the "Zao House 2.0" exhibition at the Institute of Future Human Habitats, where he explained the various innovative technologies showcased there, stimulating students' profound interest in the fusion of technology, design, architecture, and humanities.

After understanding how architectural design and artificial intelligence technologies can facilitate sustainable development and improve people's lives, our students got hands-on experience by building "smart home" models. They brainstormed how "smart home" designs can be utilized to enhance safety, convenience, and comfort in different daily-life scenarios. Their designs were creative and showcased their ability to apply design thinking to solve current life issues.

The second session was conducted by Assistant Professor Chen Xinlei from the Institute of Data and Information Research, focusing on the topic of AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things). using various case studies, Professor Chen enhanced students' understanding of AIoT. Additionally, Yin Jun, a master's student specializing in architecture from the Class of 2022, led the students in exploring the relationship between the Internet of Things and architecture. Liu Tianbo, a master's student specializing in electronic information from the Class of 2021, explained the principles of sensors, data structures, and logic to the students. He guided them in using programming to create interactive tools of the Internet of Things that are close to daily life.

Drawing to a close of the two-day learning camp, each group of students summarized their learnings at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. Through studying the architectural concepts of smart cities and the technological applications of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (AIoT), they gained inspiration in technology learning, career planning, and envisioning future lifestyles.

Finally, Mr. Wu Xiaofeng, the Party Secretary of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, delivered a speech at the closing ceremony. He encouraged the students to broaden their horizons, plan for the future, and invited students from Hong Kong to come to mainland China for learning and visits. Our Principal, Ms Ho Suk Yin, also expressed gratitude to the school for arranging enriching experiential courses for the students. Lastly, the Party Secretary Wu Xiaofeng and Principal Ho Suk Yin exchanged commemorative gifts, marking the successful ending of the two-day learning camp.
